Overview: Derek’s 90’s love-affair with dance parties and techno music has inspired this range of red wines. The passion morphed with his school nickname Deadly Derek to became DJ Deadly. He used to make CD for friends with his best DJ mixes and signed them Mixed by DJ Deadly. The Boombox is just another one of his creations, with a "hidden track" of Grenache in the mix.
Vineyard: The 2020 Boombox Shiraz is composed of fruit from 85% our estate vineyards in Angaston (Eden Valley) and 15% from the southern end of the valley floor. At 440m above sea level and with constant cooling breezes our estate vineyard fruit provides elegance and fragrant notes. 10% of the blend comprises of Grenache from the Barossa Valley foothills. These 80 year old vines add both texture and savoury notes to the wine.
Vintage Conditions: Vintage 2020 was another drought affected vintage. With less than average winter and spring rains the vines produced very small crops. The plus side of this was the quality of the fruit was outstanding with small bunches and small berries producing amazing colour and concentration of flavour.
Derek's Tasting Notes: Deep red with purple hues. The nose has wonderful lift of dark
berry fruits, floral notes, choc mint and a herbal/menthol note. The medium to full bodied palate has juicy blackberry fruit, some cinnamon/nutmeg and black olives. The oak has introduced a bitter chocolate/roasted meat character. With silky but defined tannins adding to the texture, the wine finishes long with berry fruit, savoury notes and coffee grounds.
Drink young while it is vibrant and fresh but will age in the medium term for up to ten years.
