THE MAN IN THE LABEL: The most frequent question before open the bottle is: who is the man in the label? The man in the label is Enzo Penna, an historical winemaker of Cerreto, a small village near Cossato. We call him Uncle Enzo because he married the sister of my Grandmother. He spent all his life to grow Spanna on our hills. Spanna is the tipical name of Nebbiolo grown on our hills, on ancient marine sands that donate us minerality and finesse.
APPELLATION: Coste della Sesia DOC Nebbiolo.
GRAPES: Nebbiolo (Spanna) 100%.
VINYEARDS: The fruit comes from “Palestro” and “Piazza” vinyeards in Castellengo, a hamlet of the village of Cossato. The fruit is selected from forty-years old vines.
FIELD: Acid soil composed by Marine Sand mixed with gravel, marl and kaolin clay, 280-330 mt above sea level.
PRUNING AND PRODUCTION: 8-10 buds Guyot pruning, all manual. The production is 1/1.5 kg per plants.
HARVEST: Manual. The fruit is putted in small box and immediately crushed. WINEMAKING AND AGING: the fruit is gently crushed and in the first day starts the fermentation. 10 days of fermentation with maceration and other 15 days of submerged cap maceration in big slavonian oak. The wine is aged for 18 months in used barriques, then the wine is prepared for the bottling.
